A Place to Call Home

CHESED. That is a weird word, right? It is almost like “CHEESED,” except not.

“So what does CHESED even mean?…”

CHESED (pronounced keh-sid) is a biblical word referring to mercy, compassion, love, grace, and faithfulness. There is really no English word that fully captures the kind of faithful, loyal love that lies behind this simple Bible word. The core idea of this term communicates loyalty or faithfulness within a relationship, closely relating to God’s covenant with His people. Chesed expresses God’s faithfulness to His people.

A good example of this is found in Exodus 34:6-7. In this passage, God described Himself as “abounding in” or “filled with” CHESED, which is translated “love and faithfulness,” “unfailing love,” “faithful love,” “steadfast love,” and “loyal love”… depending on the Bible version. The God of the Bible, then, is a God of CHESED.

“That’s great… but why are you wearing the shirts?”

We wear these shirts because we want them to spark a conversation with our community, so that we can extend this kind of faithful, loyal love (CHESED) to others. There is a verse in 1 John 4:19 that says, “We love because He (God) first loved us.” We have been shown the CHESED of God, and we want to extend it to others. We want our love to be… public, sacrificial, devoted, worshipful, and remembered. That is why we are serving our community, and that’s why we wear these shirts.
