A Place to Call Home

Our History

Alexander Baptist Church has had a rich history since the church was constituted on August 15, 1943. Even though ABC had 2 pastors within the first 4 years, there have only been 7 lead pastors over ABC’s 77-year history.

The church members first met in the Moffett Elementary School building in 1943. In 1955, the members of Alexander Baptist moved into their new building at 3801 Turnpike Road in Portsmouth. Over time, there were multiple building enhancements and projects that allowed the congregation to grow, and to better meet the spiritual needs of the community.

Alexander Baptist Church remained a lighthouse in that community through 2002. It was then that the members voted to purchase 11 acres of land located on Pamela Court in Chesapeake. While the members of Alexander waited for their new church building to be built, they partnered with the members of Bethany Baptist Church in Portsmouth, where our very own, Pastor Gene Primm, served as the pastor.  Alexander and Bethany worshipped together for over two years until the members of ABC moved into the new building at 4316 Pamela Court in June of 2006.

Dr. Bryan J. Ray accepted the call to become the church’s seventh lead pastor on August 1, 2010, and continues to serve in this capacity. Pastors Jeff Walton, Shawn Moose, and David DeVane serve alongside Pastor Bryan in shepherding the members of Alexander Baptist Church. To God be the Glory!
